CHINATOWN NIGHT OUT: Community After Dark
Opening Sunday, March 1st, 2026 at Null Object
New York, NY — On Sunday March 1st, 2026, Chinatown welcomes Chinatown Night Out: Community After Dark, a powerful new exhibition opening at Null Object that documents how residents, small businesses, and grassroots organizers came together in the face of rising public safety concerns.
The exhibition traces the origins of Chinatown Night Out, a community-led activation launched by Daikoku NYC after its founder, Stan Yeung, received an urgent call from neighborhood leaders warning that workers and residents no longer felt safe commuting home and local businesses were being forced to close early amid increasing crime. While citywide reports suggested declines in major felonies, localized NYPD data revealed that non-major felony offenses — including theft, fraud, and weapons possession — reached a 24-year high in 2024, with Chinatown among the neighborhoods experiencing year-over-year increases.
Through photography, video, and community storytelling, Chinatown Night Out captures both the statistics and the human impact behind them: merchants describing lost revenue and reduced foot traffic, residents expressing fear, and neighbors reclaiming their streets through collective presence. What began as a grassroots safety effort evolved into a visible show of solidarity — cars lining nearby blocks, crowds gathering organically, and creative activations (including projecting a New York Knicks game onto the Manhattan Bridge) bringing energy back without disrupting daily life. Working alongside local law enforcement and neighborhood restaurants, Daikoku NYC helped restore evening foot traffic and encouraged businesses to keep their doors open.
At its core, the exhibition is about showing up. Chinatown Night Out: Community After Dark honors a neighborhood’s resilience while spotlighting what becomes possible when community, creativity, and care intersect — fuller streets, stronger small businesses, and a renewed sense of belonging after dark.
The opening at Null Object invites New Yorkers, artists, organizers, and community members alike to engage with this urgent story — and to be part of a broader conversation about safety, visibility, and collective action in Chinatown today.
